Giving Tuesday

What is Giving Tuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that happens each year after Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

It's a time when Canadians, charities and businesses come together to celebrate giving and participate in activities that support charities and non-profits.  In 2015, over 4,700 partners came together for the 3rd annual GivingTuesday in Canada.

There is no "right" way to participate, as long as it supports generosity and giving.  Donate, volunteer time, help a neighbour, or spread the word.

The process is simple, we have a registration form for you to complete and a package designed to assist you participate in United Way Week.

There are so many options for your business to get involved: Donate a portion of your sales that week or donate proceeds from a specific item or service! Ask your customers to drop a few dollars at the till or in the United Way Piggy Banks.

What about hosting a bar-b-q or a breakfast or any other special event.

United Way sets $1.4M campaign goal

One in three is the number of Albertans who use the services of one or more of the United Way's partner agencies.

That's why this year the charitable organization has set it's fundraising goal to $1.4 million, which if reached would be double what was raised last year.

"This is the highest target we've set, but how we came up with that number is the community partners. We've approached them all as to what they felt their needs would be and with the economy the way that it is, their needs are higher than ever before," said Rob Petrone, United Way Alberta Northwest (UWAN) campaign chairman. "I'm hoping that with a lot of hard work and giving people in our community that we can come close to making that a reality."

DHT - Tools for School campaign underway

The United Way is helping to make sure all students have enough supplies when they go back to school in September.

The Tools for School partnership between United Way, several businesses and the Peace Wapiti, Grande Prairie Catholic and public school districts sees a busload full of supplies sent out to schools in need.

"There are many children in our community who arrive at school without even the most basic school supplies," said United Way's Brenda Yamkowy, who organizes the program.

Last year more than 3,850 backpacks filled with school supplies, and amounting to $24,381 in value, were distributed. If that seems like a lot, Yamkowy said there really are that many students in need.

DHT - Food Truck Frenzy a big hit

"The rain came and poured, but that didn't stop crowds of hungry consumers who gathered en masse at the Food Truck Frenzy this weekend.

The United Way Alberta Northwest (UWABNW) hosted the fundraiser Friday and Saturday, featuring 10 food truck vendors at Centre 2000 parking lot Friday and Saturday.

"It was amazing they just kept coming all day long. It exceeded our imagination as the amount of people that showed up for the two days," said UWABNW executive director Brenda Yamkowy. "People were parking two or three blocks away... to get here and are having a great time." "
